Museums and buying antiques in Lisbon
 

Hi All,

I have a planned visit coming up to Lisbon, Portugal in the second week of February. I'll be there from 10th thru 14/15 Feb.

Are there any places that I must not miss?? also any flea markets, antique shops...especially for ethnographic weapons and similar stuff that I can look out for?

If you have never been to Lisbon, i am sure you will enjoy it; this is the general opinion.
Concerning places connected with arms & armour, you must definitely visit the Military Museum. Great old palace, great arms collection and one of the greatest bronze cannons collections in the world, in the "cannon yard".
As for flee (street) markets, you have "Feira da Ladra" every Tuesdays and Saturdays. It is on the high part of Lisbon and you just have to mention "Feira da Ladra" to anyone, taxi included. Hardly weapons found here.
The greatest concentration of antique shops is situated in the street that departs from the Parliament (Assembleia da Republica).The street name is "Rua de São Bento". More than twenty shops, in both street sides; some have (sometimes) weapons, some not.
If you are still in Lisbon on a Saturday anf if you want to visit an exclusive arms & armour shop, you should go to Cascais (40 Kms by train) and visit the shop of famous historian and collector Rainer Daehnhardt. Hundreds of weapons in permanent exhibition for sale, both ethno and European.
The place is called "Sala das Armas" and the address is "Rua Visconde da Luz, 9 Cascais. It is usualy atended by Rainer Daehnhardtd himself. He speaks several languages and is specialized in the Asian route. You may phone the shop before you go (214830448); he opens at 10:00.

There is an oriental museum : Museo do Oriente

I have never been there, but assume that oriental weapons will also be on display. You can check their website : www.museodooriente.pt

At this moment they have an exhibition about India.
A wonderfull hilt of a Kastane is on the poster :)

I have been twice in Museu do Oriente; their basic collection doesn't include weapons.
The exhibition they are now showing is generaly about 'jewels' of the India route. No more than twelve weapons ( from Sri Lanka, India ...) belonging in the collection of Dr. Jorge Caravana are present, naturaly those more luxury ones decorated with gems, gold and silver, namely the Kastane in the poster,as have confirmed with himself. A very selective area :o

Thank you so much for the tips... My visa is underway and I hope to get it in the next two-three weeks. I hope to see all the places that you have mentioned. since I have never been to Lisbon before I hope and intend to make the best of my visit...

hello All,

I landed in Lisbon noon yesterday and headed straight to the Military Museum from the airport.

what a treat to the eye...!!!! One of the best kept museums I've seen in the recent times and wow what a collection of cannons...!!!!

The only thing sad was there was no information available or any catalogues in English....!!! also no souvenirs around the great arms collections...!!!

I simply felt in love with the place though for the grand collection...!!!

i do not know in Portugal if there is antique arms or weapons or gun shows or collectors meetings but maybe somebody could recommend you this if there is nay during the time of your stay?

They had a shop in the cannon yard, with coffee, souvenirs and publications (also in english i think) but this space is closed for already some time; i ignore the reason :shrug:
