New Gunong

Greetings Folks!

Got this gunong from Jimmy Manteris today. It has a bone hilt with silver mounts. The blade is laminated.

You will notice the angle of the hilt, the size of the filigree ring, the okir used, and the simplicity of the okir on the scabbard. Based on these aspects, I would place this piece as from Mindanao (possibly Maranao), and an early form, perhaps around the turn of the century.

There is one other thing. The piece is somewhat diminuitive. It is thin and 10 inches total.

Enjoy

Very nice Jose. Great, honest old piece! First bone hilt I've seen. You did good!

Thanks Steve. Yeah not a lot of bone ones like this, especially one with this quality of silver work and an early laminated blade. That is why I couldn't pass it up (trying to rebuild my collection again).

Great catch Jose. Nothing like a bunch of shiny silver fittings to bling things up !!!:D Hopefully one of these days I'll find one of these older straight bladed decked out gunongs but until then I can always look at yours and Steve's and wish.

Best,
Robert

Nice one José. I also haven't seen too many that use bone. Maybe not as flashy as ivory, but from a collection standpoint it adds a rarity factor.
Here's one more you can add to the wish list Robert. I posted this one a while back. I'm adding it here because it too is a bit diminutive at exactly 10" over all. The blade is about 5 1/4". Silver work is less fancy, but solid. Mine is doubled edged in spite of the blade shape. Is yours similar José?

Both very attractive examples and clearly older ones.

Nice to see some more Moro stuff on the board!!...always!
