Mandaya Spear
5 Attachment(s)
Recently acquired Mandaya spear. Longest spear I own. 9' 9" OAL! That is about three METERS! For comparison, I am 6'2" (1.9m)
The head is about 16" long 40.6cm, Ferrule adds another 6" (15.3cm) iron spike on butt about 6" Shaft is very flexible, but strong. |
Hi Bill,
A very nice score !! Two thumbs up . :D Nice crisply executed form, a beauty ! Believe the haft may be palmwood . Interesting that your example is a tanged head and my pair are socketed . http://www.arscives.com/historysteel...s1/188-rb5.jpg The lightness in the hand of these spears is remarkable for their great length . Is that piece ex-Bandholtz perhaps ? Congratulations !! |
Congratulations on both the spear and the panabas!
In a way I am reliefed that I didn't win it myself as I wouldn't be able to ship it home from SF with that length. Michael |
Gorgeous spear.

CONGRADULATIONS BILL
IT IS INDEED A BEAUTY :) DO YOU HAVE A TAIL TO TELL OF HOW YOU GOT IT HOME OR DID IT JUST COME IN A LONG PVC. IN THE MAIL? I BOUGHT ONE OF SIMULAR SIZE MANY YEARS BACK AT A GUN SHOW IN SAN ANTONIO ,TX. I WAS IN MY COUSINS SMALL CAR SO HAD TO RIDE ALONG HOLDING IT ALONG THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAR THE URGE TO JOUST WITH ON COMING TRAFFIC WAS STRONG BUT I RESISTED. :D I THEN PUT IT ACROSS MY CAMPER AND THRU THE WINDOW INTO MY TRUCK CAB AND HAD TO SLEEP WITH THE THING FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK. MY LATEST ADVENTURE OF THAT SORT WAS GETTING HOME FROM THE GUN SHOW WITH A 9 FOOT 2 IN. JIVARO BLOWGUN IN A 14 FOOT CAR IT JUST FIT FROM THE TRUNK DRIVERS SIDE ACROSS THE CAR AND AGAINST THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD. OH THE SUFFERING WE HAVE TO DO TO FEED OUR COLLECTORS ADDICTION  |
Beautiful puppy! (woof) :D

Barry, It came in a long pvc tube with a few others I won at the same time. I did manage to bring back a 260 pound, 54" Lantaka bronze cannon in the trunk of my Eldorado Cadillac from Toledo Ohio. Just barely fit diagonally. took three people to get it out! We DO have to "suffer" to feed our addictions!! |
HI BILL
THE EFFORT THAT GOES INTO THE AQUIRING OF NEW ITEMS FOR OUR COLLECTIONS ESPECIALLY ON A TRIP OFTEN ADDS TO THE ADVENTURE AND ENJOYMENT OF THE ITEM. I SAW A RECENT EPISODE OF ONE OF THE PAWN SHOP SHOWS CURRENTLY ON TV AND THEY FEATURED A PHILIPPINE HEADHUNTERS AX. THE EXPERT THEY CALLED IN SURE LOOKED A LOT LIKE YOU, ARE YOU MOONLIGHTING AS A TV CELEBERTY THESE DAYS :D |

Hi Bill,
I saw you on TV with a couple of head axes. One was a long graceful piece. Woud you mind posting some photos with some information about it? |
wow; super-beauty! It's such a shame, all the cut off and dismounted spear handles.......
|
The blade is the sword, but I gotta tell you that the handle is a really big part of the technology of a spear, and often a technology far more sophisticated than people from nonspear culture imagine
