This has been up in the attic for 30 years in my 'no idea what it is ' pile .. would appreciate any suggestions. It is made of wood with what seems to be thich hide binding woven around the 'neck' . The shaft is 18 inches long and the head 8 inches . There is a 'tunnel under the binding on the top of the head which loks as though it held a projecting piece .. possibly a narrow axe or adze head .. but cant be sure.

IT IS A ODD BEASTIE MOST LIKELY AN ADZ HANDLE FROM YOUR DESCRIPTION AND THE PICTURES. THE CARVING IS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO PLACE BUT LOOKS MORE LIKE INDONESIAN TO ME IF I HAD TO GUESS. IT WOULD HAVE HAD A BLADE LIKELY MADE OF METAL IS THERE ANY METAL PRESENT SUCH AS NAILS OR TACKS?
A NEAT LOOKING ITEM

re my club

Thanks , no there is no metal . However the 'tunnel' I describe which runs on top of the head but under the bindind is square sectioned , at the back it is just short of 1 inch x 1 inch and at the front half inch x half inch , so what ever was held in place by the binding was a long tapering 'thing' .

It does look like an adze handle, maybe Dayak.
