Nias 100 years ago
Hi,
for all those who are interested in tribal war dances, etc. I found that someone ( not me) listed the movie Mother Dao on You Tube The most impressive for me where the shots about Nias wardances ( 59:56) Don't know exactly when it was filmed but It seems to me a very very long time ago..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-e_kscujX4 regards, Arjan |
Shots have been taken between 1912 and 1933 according to the film.
Reminds me of some scenes in lord of the Rings :) Impressive scenery with the helmets and harnas'. |

I just found the matching description in the archives of "Beeld en Geluid" The camerawork is done by mr. Ochse for Polygoon. The visited the archipelago in 1925-1928. The village is most likely Bawomataluwo. Vincent Monnikkendam glued an enourmous lot of all interesting pieces together to make 1 movie. I see however that a lot of very, very interesting material about Nias must be still unused. |
A VERY INTERESTING FILM. IT SHOWED ALL THE INDUSTRY AS WELL AS TRIBAL CULTURE. EARLY DAYS OF THE OIL INDUSTRY, MINING IT MAY HAVE BEEN TIN AS THEY ALSO MADE THE LARGE SHINY WATER TINS. TABACCO AND THE YOUNGEST SMOKERS I HAVE EVER SEEN ONE EVEN GOING FROM BREAST TO CIGARETTE AND BACK TO BREAST AGAIN.
THE OLD SHIPS, PLANES AND TRAINS WERE A TREAT. THANKS FOR POSTING THIS. :) |
