Another African Dagger To Identify?
|
The loop on the sheath looks to be for a round-section arm belt?
The blade is similar to a more commonly seen larger sword, but I don't recall the tribe/region....... |
Nice find, Lew.
My first impulse is to say that it's a variant of the Tebu knives, with the sheath and blade very similar, and it does look as if it may have been an arm knife while the hilt is definitely a little different, keeping in mind that there are many more tribes in the region than than the larger groups that we normally see. On the other hand, that same blade shape is found down in the Congo as well, so it's only an educated guess at best. Mike |

Hi Guys
Well I took a better picture of the dagger in question. I also looked through a few books and on the web. I do think it is an arm dagger of sorts but it's not Tebu due to the lack of that steel skull crusher pommel. It doesn't strike me as Sudanese either ? The scabbard is wood covered in leather similar to Salampasu weapons and the blade and hilt resemble a Mbuun sword found on page 64 in Spring's book on African weapons. The hilt has a conical shape at the pommel which I have seen on knives from Zaire. Lew |
