Dhapur and Pamor Identification Request
 

I just joined this forum and this is my first post.

I own a Keris that was given to me by a business associate during a visit to Indonesia years ago and would appreciate any opinions as to the classification of its Dhapur and Pamor.

Dhapur is Brojol.

The pamor is Dwi Warna, ie, "two colours", understood as two types. One blade face is Bendho Sagodo , the other blade face is Udan Mas. There are several variations of these spellings.

Just a question - if we have different Pamor on each side, wouldn't it be more appropriate to call such configuration Pamor Tangkis?

In the Javanese world view more is better.

For instance, religion, indigenous Javanese religious belief systems involve animism and ancestor worship, but then other religions came along --- Buddhism, Hindu, Islam, Christianity. In the Javanese world more Gods are better, so all those new religions became layers of belief, when a new belief system was adopted, that new system did not replace the old system, it was added to what already existed.

This approach can be found broadly spread across just about everything.

So having just a single word to refer to anything is something that is not really a feature of Javanese thought, things can be looked at in different ways & thought about in different ways.

So with this keris, we can say it has two pamor motifs, we can name the motifs, we can ascribe a talismanic value to each motif, and we can ascribe a talismanic value to the two motifs viewed as a single entity.

How the pamor motifs are thought of is something for the individual, for example, if you need protection against a negative force of nature, you might believe that these two pamor motifs together will give you that, udan mas/golden rain might protect you from poverty whilst bendho saghodo will help you to find good luck, the two together form a pretty solid protection in business, if that is what need.

But if you are not inclined to belief in talismanic values, you might prefer just to call the pamor what it is:- two pamors > dwi warna.

If one is Javanese, more is always better, extract as much value from the situation as possible.

just an after thought, we can use "dwi warna" in another way too, that is, when we have two pamors on the same blade face
