Rub Al Khali knife
 

The seller said he bartered some Bedouins in the Saudi Arabian desert for this knife. There aren't any markings or decorations on the knife and the blade looks very roughly made. Does this kind of knife have a name?

It's quite a bit bigger than any paring knife I own, but I do agree it looks an awful lot like a kitchen knife. I think I read somewhere that the Bedouin used to repurpose old English kitchen knives as belt/utility knives, maybe this influenced the local style? Or maybe it's just an old kitchen knife they traded to a gullable westerner. The blade looks hand forged so at the very least it didn't come out of a factory.

THERE IS AN OLD FORUM POST KITCHEN KNIVES OF THE WORLD AND THERE SEEMS TO BE QUITE A VARIETY. THE SIZE AND SHAPE SERVES MANY PURPOSES AND IS RELATIVY INEXPENSIVE SO THE TYPE WOULD BE IN COMMON USE MOST EVERYWHERE WHERE SUCH KNIVES CAN BE MADE OR TRADED FOR.
