Hi Stu:
Not Philippines IMHO. It is a humble, village quality parang that could be from Java, but Sumatra or Kalimantan might be possibilities also. It's a general purpose knife, mainly for gardening/agricultural purposes. Perhaps someone here can help you identify it more closely with regard to the style of the scabbard or hilt, but they look fairly non-specific to me. I've taken the liberty of lightening one of your pics to better show the hilt and scabbard details. Regards, Ian |
Hello Stu,
I would say that it is a golok from Sunda (West Java). Regards, Detlef |
It is a parang from Borneo.
The description by Ian is correct. Village made. |

For me it's golok from Sunda or south Sumatra. I have the same but entirely covered with a foil of repoussé silver.

The scabbard mouth is typical for Sunda, special by golok scabbards! :) South Sumatra was strong influenced from Sunda.
Compare with old threads. ;) |
Thank you all.

The scabbard, in particular the horn bands, look an awful lot like the construction on this golok from Sunda that was in Lew's estate, and that now lives with me.
