Exceptional Philippine weapons auctioned in Spain

1 Attachment(s)
Greetings, just thought of sharing a collection of pictures I downloaded from the Fernando Duran auction last June 2023. Exceptional Philippine archipelago blades were arrayed in several "panoplia" (panoply). The common reaction I got from friends whom I shared this to was...shock, amazement, regret; a few even had a mini-existential crisis of sorts. Without further ado...feel free to discuss any of these panoplies. I'll keep adding to this thread until all the panoplies are complete, and re-labeling them in alphabetical terms. I'm not the type who saves the best for the last, so I'll start with the most jaw-dropping panoply...enjoy!

Some interesting forms in there I haven't seen before. Very cool, thank you.

Xas, Were these a museum or someone’s personal collection?
So amazing. Just when you think you’ve seen it all.Kampilan’s (?), with unusual blades.

Halloo sir, the auction house didn't specify the source, but from what I understand, such panoplies can be found either in museums (some can be seen in a previous thread on PI weapons in Spanish museums) or private collections by Spanish royalty or affluent families.

Exceptional! Also when some other weapons mixed in which are not Philippine.

Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for sharing this amazing collection of Philippines weaponry. I noticed a few Indonesian keris also slipped into the mix. ;)

Hi Xas,

Just amazing quality and diversity of pieces. There are a few Indonesian items in there as well, and perhaps a Malay piece or two. I suppose it would be too much to ask whether there is any indication of when these items were collected?

Ian.

Glad you liked it gents! The mixing-in of Indomalay items are, in my opinion, an indicator of the human and artifact movements between PH and other locations during certain eras. As a conservative guess, I believe that most of the items (except probably for the Krises and kampilans, some of which I believe are older) were late Spanish colonial era up to American era :)

Surprisingly, the blades are in a very good state, clean and etched.

... And one of those North African wedding nimchas. :D

Gorgeous collection though.

Makes sense and there has been significant trade at times between PH and its neighbors.

I agree. Many of these pieces seem to have been collected during the 19th C. However, several appear to be older, notably some of the barung, kris, and kampilan. I have posted a comment on the kris that I think is the oldest example on these panoplies in this thread.
